10 Fast Ways to Green Your Kitchen

1. Green your brew: Use a reusable coffee filter instead of paper filters (I’ve had mine for four years now, and it’s in great shape). If tea is your drink, use loose leaf tea, instead of paper bound tea bags.

2. Green your trash: Recycle and compost more than you are now. Most of us can afford to complete a trash audit. You’d be surprised at what ends up in the garbage can.

3. Green your cleaning: You don’t need harsh cleaners in any room of the house. But there’s food in the kitchen, so being more careful in this room counts even more.

4. Green your herbs: Grow your own organic herbs. They taste better, cost less, and make your windowsill a little more beautiful.

5. Green your dishes: Own the best Energy Star dishwasher you can, which saves water and energy over hand washing.

6. Green your wraps: Knock out all the plastic wrap, foil, and waxed paper use. Try reusable containers instead. A very cool, greener than plastic, container set is this Rectangular Stainless Steel Container Set – reusable, 100% recyclable, and great looking to boot.

7. Green your dishes and pots: Buy used when possible, avoid plastics, and don’t replace dishes and cookware just because you’re bored with your old design. Scaling down your kitchen items is a great green step.

8. Green your veggie ends: And any other left-over disposable food items, by using your garbage disposal for items you don’t compost.

9. Green your paper products: The best way to green your kitchen paper products is to quit using them. Use cloths, rather than paper towels to clean. Use cloth napkins over paper.

10. Green your meals: Stock up on the right organic foods. Eat less meat. Buy fewer prepackaged food items. All of the above contribute to better health – for you and the planet.
