I recently saw a study that looked at how many people buy bottled water for drinking at home, and what it costs them. The results were insane. There are folks paying up to $8 per gallon for water!
Are you guilty? If you’re only buying bottled, you just might be, even if you’re getting your H2O on sale. Not to mention all those bottles. Even if you recycle, it takes lots of energy to make plastic water bottles, and research shows that many people are tossing their bottles, not recycling. That’s a huge drain on the earth.
Top that off with the gas it takes to transport water to stores from the factories, and you’re looking at scads of gasoline waste; it’s crazy.
Better green choices:
Tap water, tap water, oh, and did I mention tap water? Most tap water is safe to drink. If you don’t like the taste, you can make it taste cleaner by filling a pitcher, and allowing your water to sit out for a day or two. That evaporates chlorine and odd flavors. That’s what I do. You can also add slices of citrus fruit to jazz up plain old water. Tangerine is especially yummy.
A filter. If by chance your tap water is iffy, get a filter. Filters aren’t the best choice because they’re not recyclable, but their bulk adds up slower than water bottles.
If you’re addicted to the bottle itself, pick up an eco-friendly reusable water bottle. Serve your addiction and the planet. I have a Klean Kanteen that I love, but there are other good choices out there. Read the following:
Your worst option is to continue to buy bottled water. However, you can green this choice up some by purchasing the largest bottles possible, or by purchasing water in those refillable containers. Some stores have refill water centers.
Are you still buying bottled water?
